How the Native Americans made maple syrup!!

Here you see a place where a Native American man still comes to collect sap and make syrup!!
The large wooden log was carved out to place the sap in. Hot rocks were laid in the sap to heat it up to boiling!

A spile carved out of wood drains sap into a carved out log!

Eventually they began to use kettles to heat the sap over the fire.

What an amazing learning experience today!

Maple Syruping!

Well what an amazing trip!! We actually got to see sap dripping from the tree! That hardly ever happens!! Here are some pictures to show you our time together!

Step One:
Use a Caliper to measure a tree. It must be 10 inches in diameter, which makes it 40 years old!

Step Two:
Drill a hole in the tree.

Step Three:
Hammer in a spile

Step Four:
Hang the bucket on the spile and put a lid on it.

Step Five:
Boil the sap.

Step Six:
Enjoy!

YUM!

Then back to school to record what we learned! I hope your child was able to share their learning with you!
Morgan is helping a friend sound out some words!!
Jordan A. and Jordan D. talking about their thinking!

Ayla is using the "Blends" chart to help her write words!! I love watching them use what they know about literacy to help them with science!! :-)

 Love watching them work!

Reading with our Second Grade Buddies to Celebrate Reading Month

Our reading buddies came down and read to Fawn Friends out of their Reader's Workshop bins. I love hearing the buzz of conversations around books between kindergarteners and second graders!
Take a look...

Sharing Habitats with Second Grade Buddies

Before we took our Dioramas home we had the chance to display them in the library and share what we learned with our second grade buddies!
Our buddies then shared their nonfiction writing about Michigan with us!
It's so awesome to learn together!

How Do Different Pushes and Pulls Affect the Motion of an Object??

Our new science unit is in full swing!
We began at the beginning of the month recording what we know about motion on our new K.L.E.W.S (What we Know, What we Learn, Evidence of learning, What we Wonder and Science Terms) chart:

We had some wonders that led to some new science terms right away!

Then we went on a motion hike on the playground!
Scientists at work while playing!

Ask your scientist about these pictures, how each piece of equipment moved and how we could change the speed of motion!

We learned something is in motion if it is moving :-)

This past week we recorded what we've learned so far in our science notebooks...

Looking forward to continuing on our quest to answer this big question!
